WICB gets itself and the West Indies team a new name

The West Indies Cricket Board changed its name to Cricket West Indies on Wednesday, Johnny Grave, the new chief executive of the board confirmed. That is not the only change the newly named Cricket West Indies inflicted – they have also decided to rename the team and it will now be called Windies.

One of the most entertaining cricket teams, the Windies is not playing the Champions Trophy this year since they are ranked No.9 in ICC ODI Team Rankings whereas only the top 8 teams qualify for the CT. They were the champions of the 2004 edition after snatching victory from the jaws of defeat in the final against the hosts England.

“Cricket West Indies better reflects how the organisation operates, as there are many different stakeholders who we work in partnership with, under the unifying aim of improving cricket at all levels within the region,” Grave said. “We plan to work even more closely with them over the next few years and consultation will begin immediately as we develop a new strategic plan for 2018-2023.”

This is the second time the board has changed its name in the past 21 years. Pat Rousseau, the former president, scrapped the word control and chose West Indies Cricket Board. For the board’s current president Dave Cameron, the new name is more appropriate.

New name is more elusive 

“Whilst the Board of Directors has an important role, we feel that the new name is more inclusive and appropriate, as we want to recognise the valuable role that our players, territorial boards, staff, supporters, governments, coaches, match officials and volunteers, play in the organization.” he said.

As per Cameron, for Cricket West Indies to operate effectively they need all of their stakeholders to work in cooperation and the name change is a vital first step in their strategy.
