Shahid Afridi, the former Pakistan cricketer, has expressed his gratitude towards Indian cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh. Earlier, the Indian duo helped Afridi’s foundation, which has been working relentlessly for the ones affected in the coronavirus pandemic.
Yuvraj and Harbhajan had to face a lot of backlash thereafter. However, later things took a rather ugly turn. Afridi, on his visit to the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK), made some stern remarks about India and their Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
They are helpless: Shahid Afridi
Subsequently, Harbhajan and Yuvraj lashed out the Khyber Agency-born for his distasteful remarks. Meanwhile, Afridi also feels that India is a country where people are being oppressed. Hence, he reckons that Yuvraj and Harbhajan’s criticised him out of helplessness.
“I’ll remain thankful towards Harbhajan & Yuvraj for supporting my foundation. The real problem is that this is their compulsion. They live in that country. ‘Wo majboor hain’ (They are helpless). They know that people are being oppressed in their country. I won’t say anything further,” Afridi was quoted as saying on Pakistan channel Hum News.
Harbhajan, while expressing his anger, said that Afridi’s comments were uncalled for and it wasn’t acceptable. Moreover, he stated that Afridi doesn’t have any rights to speak ill against India.
“This is very upsetting what Shahid Afridi has come up with, talking ill about our country and our Prime Minister. This is just not acceptable,” Harbhajan told to Sports Tak.
Even Yuvraj, in a tweet, wrote that he won’t be helping out Afridi anytime in the future. “Really disappointed by @SAfridiOfficial’s comments on our Hon’b PM @narendramodi ji. As a responsible Indian who has played for the country, I will never accept such words. I made an appeal on your behest for the sake of humanity. But never again,” his tweet read.
Not only Yuvraj and Harbhajan, but the likes of Gautam Gambhir, Shikhar Dhawan also bashed Afridi for the same. Even Danish Kaneria, Afridi’s former teammate, went on to say that the latter should think before opining on certain matters.
Kaneria said that those kinds of words degrade the image of cricket in Pakistan. Moreover, he mentioned that Afridi should cut off his ties from cricket if he wishes to join politics.
