Former England and Pakistan bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed has been roped in as the coach of the Windies cricket team, something that was confirmed earlier today. Ahmed was successful as a leg-spinner for Pakistan in yesteryear while being equally successful as a coach for the teams he has coached. He has been instrumental in the spin bowling departments of sides, especially working with the likes of Moeen Ali and Rashid Khan of England in recent times.
Concluding a somewhat illustrious international career, Mushtaq Ahmed has taken up several coaching positions. He has worked with the Pakistan Super League, Indian Premier League, Surrey as well as the England Cricket Board. While he served as bowling consultant with the England side, he was an integral part of the coaching staff as the team tasted success in his six-year stint. The laurels included a World T20 triumph and an impressive Ashes victory.
Pleased to be working with the Windies side: Mushtaq
Speaking following his appointment, Mushtaq Ahmed stated that he was indeed privileged to be working with the Windies Cricket team while adding a bit of the history of fast bowling and the pace bowling culture of the West Indies side of yesteryear.
“It’s a privilege to work with West Indies cricket team. A team with a very rich history of class, commitment and sheer dominance in the cricket world. The talent from this part of the world has been exceptional and I am quite excited to work with them,” Ahmed said.
However, Ahmed will have his task cut out given the state West Indies cricket is in at the moment. Needless to say, he will have an uphill task of building a formidable bowling unit – one that can match up to the glory days.
