Winning the T20 World Cup is a dream: Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma, the vice-captain of India’s ODI and T20I sides, said that laying hands on the T20 World Cup is a dream for the national team. The upcoming edition of the championship is scheduled to take place from the mid of October in Australia. However, the coronavirus pandemic, which has affected over three million globally, has cast a cloud over the future of the tournament.

Back in 2007, the very year when he made his India debut, Rohit was a part of the T20 World Cup-winning team under MS Dhoni’s leadership. Meanwhile, with the situation, showing no signs of improvement, the Nagpur-born has kept his fingers crossed over the future of the mega event.

“Winning the T20 World Cup is a dream for all of us. Every time you go out there you want to win every game but the World Cup is the pinnacle of everything,” the 33-year-old Rohit was quoted as saying in Mumbai Indians’ official website.

“I want to win World Cups, we are not sure when this T20 WC is going to happen but as and when it happens, we will have a fair amount of time to prepare for it. I’m sure the cricket boards around the world are not going to say ‘everything is fine we are going to schedule the World Cup’,” he stated.

For the time being, with India being in a lockdown until May 3, the players are residing in their homes. Rohit is aware that the cricketers need to start, practising and hitting the gym in order to get fit for the T20 World Cup.

“Of course, there will be preparation time that will be given to all the countries because everybody is under lockdown. Nobody is playing, or practicing or training besides staying home and doing limited stuff and that is not enough. We need to hit the gym and start training before going on the field,” Rohit added.

Rohit is one of the most successful players in the format. Having notched 2,773 runs, he is second on the list of all-time T20I run-scorers after Virat Kohli. The veteran also has four T20I centuries, the most by any batsman.

Rohit has also turned around the Mumbai team’s fortunes in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He took over as the captain in 2013 and has helped them win the title four times.
