West Indies played a thrilling game against Bangladesh and won it by four runs in the ongoing Women’s World Cup on Friday (March 18). But during the closing stages of the game, the team underwent a stressful period when Shamilia Connell collapsed on the field. There were concerns on the field as the rest of the teammates surrounded her soon and even the medical staff also rushed on the field to check on her.

The ambulance came on the ground and she was taken to the hospital, however, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has now cleared that it was only a precautionary measure. The board has also cleared that she is doing well and has been discharged from hospital too.

CWI and the ICC will now provide a fresh update on her on Saturday morning. “Yes she was taken as a precaution to hospital but has been discharged. We will update the media officially in the morning once we have an update from the Team Physio and our CMO,” Cricket West Indies CEO Johnny Grave said while speaking to Cricbuzz.

Incident took place when she was bowling the 47th over

The unfortunate incident took place when Shamilia Connell was bowling the 47th over of the innings. Bangladesh needed 13 off 19 deliveries when she collapsed on the field before deliveries the final ball of the over. She was seen clutching her stomach while getting into the ambulance.

Skipper Stafanie Taylor and Player of the match Hayley Matthews both expressed concerns but were confident that their teammate would come out of it soon. “It was sad to see her go down but we look at the bright side, it was probably for us to regroup and we did that and changed the momentum,” Taylor said in post-match presentation.

“Obviously a bit worrying to see her go down like that. She is a fighter, I am not sure what’s wrong with her but she will be alright (sic),” Matthews said.
