Women's World Cup 2022: Umpire misses ball count, Omaima Sohail bowls a 7-ball over vs South Africa

The ongoing edition of the ICC Women’s World Cup in New Zealand has already witnessed a lot of close matches and excellent cricket. The ninth match of the tournament is currently in progress between Pakistan and South Africa. While the game is going on without much hindrance, an umpiring error during South Africa’s innings has caught the attention of the fans.

The 27th over of South Africa’s innings saw seven balls being bowled and it seems that not many realized it. Pakistan’s Omaima Sohail delivered the over which was filled with action as Laura Wolvaardt smashed a boundary off the second ball.

However, in what should’ve been a final ball of the over, the umpire adjudged Sune Luus LBW. But the batter overturned the decision for the second time in the innings. This should’ve ended the 27th over but the umpire insisted on bowling one more deliver which eventually turned out to be the seventh ball of the over. It seems as if the umpire missed the count thanks to the DRS drama off the final delivery of the over.

South Africa post 223/9 in their 50 overs

Meanwhile, South Africa managed to post a competitive total of 223 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their 50 overs after losing the toss. The score would’ve been much lesser if Pakistan had held on to their four dropped catches and three missed run-out opportunities. Laura Wolvaardt (75) and skipper Sune Luus (62) were the half-centurions in the innings while Chloe Tryon (31) and Trisha Chetty (31) provided the much needed momentum to the innings.

For Pakistan, Ghulam Fatima and Fatima Sana bowled well sharing six wickets between them equally. They will be ruing the missed catches as the team had South Africa struggling at 120/5 at one stage after 32 overs. Nevertheless, they have restricted the opposition to a decent total and would be backing themselves to chase the total. Having said that, South Africa defended 207 runs in their first game of the tournament and expect this to be a close game.
