Adhering to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) rules, India are set to sport the away jersey in the game against England on Sunday. There’s been a lot of excitement on social media and various jerseys have been doing the rounds over the last couple of weeks. But the confirmation never came from the BCCI or the team management. However, the jersey dominated by the orange colour was revealed on Wednesday and not many are liking it, especially the politicians.

The Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) leaders accused the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP of playing the saffron politics. Abu Azmi, the SP MLA even went on to say that the Muslim leader finalised the colour of the national flag and Modi wants to turn India into saffron completely. Even the Congress leader Naseem Khan felt that the country’s unity is getting damaged and one should respect the country.

However, even the BJP and Shiv Sena leaders have opened up on the matter responding to the allegations of the opposition.

What problem they have with Saffron?

BJP MLA Ram Kadam lashed out at the opposition parties and reckoned that they are running out of issues which is why targetted the Indian jersey now. “Hence they are politicizing what should be the colour of the Indian team’s jersey … Why not saffron? Why they hate saffron so much? The BJP’s flag has both green and saffron in it. Let the cricketers decide the colour of their jersey. Will the opposition decide that?” he was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

The Shiv Sena spokesperson Manisha Kayande also questioned the opposition parties asking the problem they have with the jersey while also terming the discussion on the issue as the childish talk. “What problem they have with saffron? Saffron is part of the tricolour and it was chosen for the jersey. What is the problem with that?” she said. Meanwhile, India’s bowling coach Bharat Arun cleared that the team is still not aware of the jersey they are going to wear for England game.
