Ravi Shastri has been recently appointed as the new head coach of Indian team. There was quite a controversy surrounding Anil Kumble’s exit which was a result of a fall out between him and the Indian captain Virat Kohli. When asked about the Kumble-Kohli row, Test wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha steered clear of the dispute saying he isn’t allowed to comment on the topic.

Saha on the role of head coach

The Bengal-lad who has excelled with his duties behind the wickets and also as a lower order batter said that coach can’t be expected to teach the players at International level. He said that the coach’s main role is to watch from outside and to analyze the game.

“See, you obviously cannot expect the coach to teach us cricket at the international level. But yes, watching from outside and analyzing things is very important. Since we players are always in action and often react to the heat of the moment, we may not be able to take the right call always. That’s where the coach comes into play as he is watching the action from outside, which makes a difference,” he was quoted by the Telegraph.

There is a lot of ambiguity regarding the roles of Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan, who have been appointed as batting and bowling consultants respectively for the away tours.

“I knew that Rahulbhai and Zak have been finalised… Anyway, no matter what, I don’t get affected by such things… My focus always stays on the team’s performance, the basics and keeping things as simple as possible,” Saha stressed.

Not taking Sri Lanka lightly

India is due to tour Sri Lanka, where they will play three Tests, 5 ODIs and a T20I starting July 26. The Lankans have been struggling for quite some time now, having lost the ODI series at home to Zimbabwe. Even in the one-off Test match, they were made to sweat a lot by the minnows. But Saha warned against taking Lankans lightly.

“Look, irrespective of everything, we’ll have to play away from home. Away matches are always tough.Lately, all the Test matches we played and won have been at home. So it’s always difficult when you play an away series,” he pointed out.
