Sanju Samson’s father worked as a constable at Delhi Police during his younger days. The whole family stayed in Delhi, where Samson and his brother played a lot of cricket at the school level and club cricket as well. In the latest interaction, the Rajasthan Royals captain shared his stories of childhood and revealed his parent’s struggle to shape his career.

Samson recalled that there was a huge competition in and around Delhi, and both the brothers faced rejection in their first few trials. He further said that, after this rejection, their father took a bold decision to shift their base to Kerala, and asked them to play for the state. Although Samson’s brother could not continue and shift to a different field, it was Sanju, who made it to the Kerala state team.

“In Delhi, there were many cricketers at every corner of the city. I and my brother gave trials on a couple of occasions but failed to get selected. Then my father said we are from Kerala, and you should play from there only. Suddenly in one month’s time, we shifted to Trivandrum, Kerala. My mom had said, let them pass the 10th grade, who will give admission in Kerala? But my father was hell-bent on this decision,” Samson said on the “Breakfast with Champions” show on YouTube.

Samson further revealed that when he didn’t play club cricket for a couple of years, after shifting to Kerala, his father took voluntary retirement from Delhi Police and moved to Kerala with the family. He then added it was a challenging phase of his life when his father used to take him to practice on a two-wheeler.

“After a couple of years, where I didn’t play anything, he took the voluntary retirement from Delhi Police and moved to Kerala. He then would take us to practice in the day and evening in a two-wheeler, and it was a challenging phase” Samson said.

The right-handed batter further stated that it was certainly a bold decision by their parents to shift their base to Kerala, to help him become a cricketer. In the end, he recalled a story that when he and his brother used to play cricket in the younger days, their parents would carry the kit bags to the bus, and people would be cracking a joke about them becoming the next Tendulkar.

“At that time, our father and mother didn’t make us realize that we are struggling for you. When you are mature enough and understand a lot of things about different situations in the family. It was a bold decision by both of them and sacrificed a lot for us. When we were playing in Delhi, my mother and father would take our kitbags to the bus, as it was heavy, and the voices from the back would erupt, “Sachin aur uske Papa mummy ja rahe hai Bhai’, yeh banega Tendulkar’,” he added.
