Pakistan cricketers are not new to controversies. There is no secret that not all Pakistan cricketers share the same amount of respect for each other. There have been many instances where a former player has criticized a current player or vice versa. In fact, the sight of two former cricketers going after each other is a rare one. In this piece, we will take a look back at the time when Mohammad Yousuf had an ugly public spat with Ramiz Raja.
The incident dates back to 2015 when the return of Mohammad Amir was a heated discussion in the Pakistan cricket circles. After being charged with spot-fixing in 2010, Amir was banned from all forms of cricket for five years. However, the left-arm pacer was getting some support in 2015 for a comeback to the national team. Former Pakistan cricketers were divided on this topic, with some in favor of the pacer while others against it.
The personal attacks, back & forth between Ramiz Raja and Mohammad Yousuf
In the middle of all of this, Yousuf and Raja were called on a television show to discuss the matter. Yousuf seemingly backed the decision to bring back the pacer in the team and said that the team management wanted him to make a comeback. Once Yousuf was done having his say, Ramiz jumped in with an attack on the former, saying, “people should stop lying once they grow a beard.”
The words of Raja were an indirect attack on the former batsman for changing his religion from Christianity to Islam. Yousuf was not having any of this, as he went on to launch a reply which was seemingly an attack on Raza’s cricketing career. He called Ramiz ‘just an English teacher,’ who did nothing in cricket.
Yousuf questioned Raja’s credibility as a Pakistan cricketer. He said that the cricketer turned commentator should be ashamed about his stats in Test cricket, where he has scored only two centuries in 57 Tests. Yousuf was of the opinion that Ramiz should be sharing his views on cricket with that record. The two known faces went on to launch some more personal attacks on live television. The anchor tried to control the situation, but the two went on having a go at each other for some time.
