With growing arrests and charge sheets being filed for youth celebrating Pakistan’s win in the finals of the recently concluded Champions Trophy, yet another youngster is suffering the brunt of the growing levels of intolerance with respect to anti-nationalism in the country.

Shadab Hasan, who landed himself in trouble for posting a congratulatory message for Pakistan, is now struggling to find himself a lawyer as the union unanimously decided to boycott the case. To protest against the act of nationalism, Laksar Advocates’ Association based in Roorkee, have decided not to represent the young boy.

The President of Laksar Advocates’ Association Swatantra Kumar quoted after the meeting,”Shadab Hasan’s act was anti-national, therefore all the lawyers in the town have decided that they will not appear on his behalf in court.” according to Times of India.

Relatives believe Shadab more secure at jail

Apart from the unanimous boycott from the lawyers, Shadab’s relatives are also wary of the dangers he would face outside the premise of jail. “There is fear of him going to jail for a long time if nobody fights his case, There is also danger outside as volunteers of a Hindu right-wing group have strongly condemned his actions. He may be attacked.” commented one of the relatives of the youth.

“In the absence of a private pleader, we will urge the court for a public prosecutor. But, unfortunately, we are not in hurry for his bail, because we fear he may be attacked after his release. We will try for his bail after Eid when the dust is settled. I hope good sense will prevail upon our people by then.” said Shadab Khan’s uncle.

However, Navin Chandra Semwal, an inspector at Laksar police station has a different take on the entire issue. “The accused is a graduate and of sound mind, who runs a business. Thus, what he had done was a deliberate action. The decision of lawyers is certainly a welcome move,” believes the officer.
