Zimbabwe subjected Bangladesh to another embarrassment as they them in the opening ODI of the series in Harare on Friday, 5th of August. The hosts proved that their T20I series triumph was no fluke after defeating Bangladesh comprehensively by five wickets on the back of inspirational tons from Innocent Kaia and Sikandar Raza to register their first victory against the visitors after 19 consecutive ODI defeats.

The visitors were put in to bat first after Zimbabwe won the toss on a batting-friendly surface in Harare. Bangladeshi batters made merry in the first innings as all four top-order batters registered half centuries, a first in their ODI history. They finished with a competitive total of 303/2 after their 50 overs.

In their pursuit, Zimbabwe made an atrocious start losing both their opening batters inside the first two overs, including skipper Regis Chakabva. After the dismissal of Wesley Madhevere in the 14th over, the result seemed like a formality, and it should have been, if not for some inexplicable fielding efforts from the Bangladeshi players who dropped several chances in the field.

Kaia and Raza gleefully accepted the gifts from the Bangladeshi fielders and snatched the match from the visitors’ grip by stitching a 192-run stand for the fourth wicket before Raza went into overdrive, finishing the chase with ten balls to spare.

The good news for Tamim Iqbal’s men is that they don’t have much time to ponder this disappointing loss as they go again on Sunday, August 7, at the same venue and will hope for a better effort in the field this time around.

Pitch Conditions

The series opener turned out to be an entertaining affair, as it had enough for both the batters and the bowlers. The second match at the same venue might assist the slower bowlers on a used pitch, and the team winning the toss might opt to bat first.

Playing Combinations for ZIM vs BAN

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s stock are rising in white-ball cricket against all odds, first with their qualification to the T20 World Cup and now the victories against Bangladesh. The only concern for the team will be the lack of form shown by the top-order batters, as Raza and the lower-order batters have been bailing them out frequently.

Predicted XI: Regis Chakabva (c & wk), Innocent Kaia, Wesley Madhevere, Tarisai Musakanda, Sikandar Raza, Milton Shumba, Ryan Burl, Luke Jongwe, Victor Nyauchi, Richard Ngarava, Wellington Masakadza

Bangladesh

Litton Das’ hamstring injury is a big blow for the subcontinent side as the batter looked in terrific touch before retiring in the first ODI. He has been ruled out for the remainder of the series as the Tamim’s men look to bounce back. Mushfiqur Rahim and pacer Shoriful Islam are also a doubt for the game after suffering minor niggles.

Predicted XI: Tamim Iqbal (c), Anamul Haque (wk), Mushfiqur Rahim, Nazmul Hossain Shanto, Mahmudullah, Afif Hossain, Mosaddek Hossain, Mehidy Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Mustafizur Rahman
