The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the 2016 champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL), didn’t have the greatest of seasons in the extravaganza last time around. The team somehow managed to qualify for the playoffs, having won only six out of their 14 encounters.

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) were tied with SRH on points, but the latter went through on a superior NRR. However, they got knocked out after the Eliminator in Visakhapatnam. Their batting was top-heavy and was found wanting, resulting in collapses.

Even their bowlers went under the swords plenty of times. The auction for the next edition will take place in Kolkata on December 19 and SRH will be busy, chalking out plans. The team also needs to think about the player retention and releases as well.

In the article, let’s take a look at three players SRH can release before the IPL 2020 Auction

Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib Al Hasan was roped in by SRH in 2018 at a price of INR 2 crore. It wasn’t a surprise as the Jessore-born is amongst the best all-rounders in all forms of the sport. The southpaw was an integral member last year where the Orange Army were the runners-up.

But in the previous season, Shakib got to play only three games as the franchise had quite a few quality overseas cricketers in the ranks. David Warner, Rashid Khan and Jonny Bairstow were certainties in the lineup. Mohammad Nabi chipped in with the ball and hence, Shakib hardly broke into the eleven.

The Bangladesh veteran won’t be playing next season as he is serving a ban from the ICC that will only end in October, 2020. Therefore, the Sunrisers can release him and try to find someone as good as Shakib if not better.

Abhishek Sharma

Abhishek Sharma came into the spotlight after the 2018 U19 World Cup in New Zealand. His power-hitting potential earned him an IPL contract for the Delhi Daredevils, now Capitals. There he played at a strike-rate of 190.90. In the last season, the left-hander was traded to the Sunrisers.

Unfortunately, the Punjab cricketer got chances in only three matches where he couldn’t quite make an impact. SRH has quite a few all-rounders that includes Shakib, Nabi and Vijay Shankar. So, being a lesser-known player, Sharma found it tough to make the eleven.

The 19-year-old is also more than a handy left-arm spinner as well. In the presence of some big names in the Sunrisers setup, it’s likely that he will have to warm up the bench for most part of the league. So, the franchise may release him off his services.

Shreevats Goswami

SRH shelled out a stunning INR 1 crore for Shreevats Goswami in the 2018 IPL Auction. The Bengal cricketer made his comeback in the tournament after a gap of six years. Back then, Wriddhiman Saha was the team’s first-choice keeper.

It was only after Saha, also a Bengal keeper, suffering from an injury that Goswami was included in the eleven. And Shreevats didn’t disappoint by any means. He played six games and had an average of 17.33 at a healthy strike-rate of 130. He was able to make use of the powerplay.

In 2019, Bairstow got into the Sunrisers and it meant that Goswami became the third-choice keeper in the Orange Army. If he stays with SRH, he may end up out of the eleven again. The Sunrisers have the option of releasing him and draft in another utility player.
