Before the Ashes 2021-22 in Australia, a big bombshell was dropped on the team as Test skipper Tim Paine withdrew from the captaincy following his off-field scandal. With Paine stepping down before an important Ashes Trophy, the Australia team is in search of a new captain.
Paine was made the Test skipper after Sandpaper scandal back in 2018 in South Africa. And, he has done a fine job leading from the front with 11 wins and 4 draws in 23 matches. With the Tasmanian cricketer stepping down, there are a few options Australia can look for a Test skipper.
1. Pat Cummins
Pat Cummins has been one of the main players who has been considered for the Test skipper cap. With Paine giving up, several cricket pundits have elected Cummins to be the next Test skipper of Australia.
One of the most important members in Australia’s Test bowling unit, Cummins has some experience of captaining New South Wales. The team has also won the title under his captaincy.
Currently, Cummins is the vice-captain of the Test format for his nation. A fast bowler being a captain of a team may affect their workload, but Cummins can still be pondered for the next skipper in the field.
