From practising on a charpoy mat when he was a child to making it to the Indian team at the age of 19, Shubman Gill has surely come a long way. He has ascended up the ranks quite quickly and already had an opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the finest cricketers in India. The Punjab lad is one of the finest cricketers in his age group and promises to play for India for a long time.

Even though he is yet to make his international debut, Gill will believe that he belongs to this level and is capable of delivering. He has been terrific in domestic cricket and has honed his skills under the guidance of the great Rahul Dravid. Gill is known for his penchant to score big runs and always seems to be hungry for a good score.

The World Cup 2019 is just a few months away from now and there are several players who are competing for the 15 or 16 spots that are available. Shubman Gill is surely one amongst them and could be a perfect fit in the India squad.

Here are three reasons why Shubman Gill should be picked:

1. Back-up opener

With Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan doing well, India hasn’t laid enough emphasis on having a backup opener. It was KL Rahul who took the spot of a backup opener until a while ago. But, he is now struggling with his form and is surrounded by quite a few controversies.

Hence, the management could possibly look at Shubman Gill as the backup opener for the iconic tournament. Gill usually bats in the top order and negotiating the new ball shouldn’t be a big deal for him. Moreover, he has got the technique to counter the swinging conditions in England. Thus, the management should surely give it serious thought about having him as a backup opener.
