Sanju Samson, the young Indian wicketkeeper has been in the limelight from the last couple of months. Earlier, he had hogged the spotlight for smashing a double century against Goa in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019. Following his heroics, Indian selectors picked him in the T20I squad that played against Bangladesh.

However, ahead of the West Indies T20I series he was yet again dropped without getting a single game in the previous series. Moreover, he has been drafted back into the national side as a replacement of injured Shikhar Dhawan. Now, he has opened up about the quality he holds in his game and how he is different from others.

The Kerala wicketkeeper made his debut for Team India in 2015 in the T20 format but was dropped from the side after playing a single match. In last four years, he has been performing decently well in the domestic cricket in order to get back into the national side. He has amassed 2945 runs in 53 first-class appearances at an average of 36.81. In List A games, he holds an average of 30.82.

Sanju Samson briefs about the qualities in his playing style

Recently in an interview, Samson said that he has a different style of batting, who just wanted to dominate the bowlers. The young cricketer also recited that he can’t compromise his batting style behind making runs in a consistent fashion.  As per the Kerala wicket-keeper, whenever he gets an opportunity, he tries to utilise it to the fullest. Samson also added that he always looks to go for match-winning knocks while playing for any side. He thinks that consistency in his case will not lead his team to a victory.

“I like to keep things as simple as possible and when I get the opportunity, I look to score big. If I get five innings, I want to score big in one or two innings and win matches for my team. Consistency in my innings won’t win matches for my team. It is more important to play an outstanding inning to win my team games. I go behind that kind of idea,” Sanju Samson said as quoted by India Today.

Sanju Samson also said that it all depends on the team management on how they want to utilise him. If they ask him to hold the wicket keeping gloves behind the stumps he will do that otherwise he will do fielding during the games.

“I am a keeper and when my team wants me to keep, I do that and when they ask me to field, I do that. I can’t tell the team what I want to do right? The team is the priority,” he added.

Virat Kohli and Co will now host three-match T20I series for West Indies starting on December 6. But, the important thing will be to watch whether Samson gets a chance to prove his mantle in the team.
