This collision was rather a deadly one, on the first day of the first Test between Pakistan and Australia in 1976 the day opened rather badly for the Pakistani side as they were 3 down before reaching the 100 mark. Amidst all the excitement the clash left people with widened eyes. The duo of Javed Maindad and Zaheer Abbas came with a hope of rescuing Pakistan when Thompson, who already had scalped 2 wickets, charged in with full pace the delivery Abbas top edged the ball. Alan Turner at mid-wicket started his race to catch the white while Thompson too began the chase with his eyes on the sky.

And there it was ‘boom’ Thompson, the pacer swearing with his slackly hanging arm and Turner lying on the ground as dead as a doornail. The incident had its after effect, Turner came on to bat later that day but for Thompson it was curtains down for the entire series. He came back in 1977 Ashes to bowl though he grabbed 23 wickets leading the attack, the incident had taken away his consistent speed.
