In the last few years, India has emerged as the top cricketing nation of the world. The Indian side has proven itself in each and every format of the game. One of the major reasons behind the success of the team has been the domestic structure of Indian cricket. The nation produces a bunch of quality players every year courtesy of tournaments like Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, Deodhar Trophy, and IPL.

While these tourneys provide a massive advantage to the Indian selectors as there is a healthy competition prevailing in the team however, this competition also has a negative impact on the careers of the under-performing stars. The competitiveness in the Indian team can be known by seeing the fact players like Mayank Markande and Siddarth Kaul had made their T20I debut in the last 18 months, but right now, they are not even in the squad.

Apart from these upcoming stars, there are also a few veterans who have not announced their retirement formally but, it seems like they may never play another T20I for India in their careers.

Here’s a list of 5 active Indian cricketers whose T20I career is all but over

1. Suresh Raina

One of the most experienced T20I players of the country, Suresh Raina was a part of the Indian playing XI which played its first T20I against South Africa in 2006. He was a regular fixture in the T20I team for the next 10 years.

However, his inability to tackle the short-pitched deliveries led to his exit from the team. Raina has played 78 T20Is for India where he has aggregated 1,605 runs at an average of 29.18.

Though he has been playing for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, the left-handed batsman has not played a T20I for India since July 2018. Given that the age factor is not in his favor, Raina may never be able to come back to the Indian T20I team.

2. Kedar Jadhav

Another player from the Chennai Super Kings team, Kedar Jadhav has been struggling with his form of late. He had been contributing actively with both, the bat and the ball for India but, his performances have not been the same in the year 2019.

While the Maharashtra-born all-rounder had started his career as a wicketkeeper, he worked on his bowling skills to evolve into a worthy all-rounder. Jadhav has played 9 T20Is in his international career but the fact that his last T20I appearance for India came in the year 2017 indicates that the Indian team no longer needs his services.

Even though Hardik Pandya is out with injury at the moment, the selectors have included Shivam Dube in the team. This is a massive hint that Jadhav may never return to the Indian T20I side.

3. Ravichandran Ashwin

India’s premier off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin has been very important for the Indian Test team but, the same cannot be said about Ashwin’s presence in the T20I team. He had made his T20I debut in 2010 against Sri Lanka in Harare and after that; he played 45 more T20I matches.

The Chennai-born spin bowler scalped 52 wickets in his T20I career and had the best figures of 4/8. However, the team management chose to include leg-spinners, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav in India’s T20I team with the goal of playing attacking cricket.

This move led to Ashwin’s ouster from the team and despite the off-spinners like Parvez Rasool and Washington Sundar have played T20 cricket for India after Ashwin’s exit, the selectors have never considered the former KXIP skipper for the shortest form of the game since 2017.

4. Ajinkya Rahane

The vice-captain of the Indian Test team, Ajinkya Rahane has been away from the T20I team since August 2016. The opener had not been able to cement his spot in the limited opportunities that he received, thus the team management has used Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul as their opening batsmen.

Rahane had played 20 T20Is for India, aggregating 375 runs at a below-par average of 20.83. Also, his strike rate was below 115 which is why he has failed to make it to the Indian T20I side despite performing consistently in the IPL.

The Mumbai-born batsman was the leading run-scorer for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2019. Still, the chances that he plays a T20I for India are minimal at the moment.

5. MS Dhoni

The only Indian captain to have won the ICC T20 World Cup, MS Dhoni’s T20I career seems to have ended with the rise of Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson. The Ranchi-born star has taken a break from international cricket right now and he has made himself unavailable for selection.

The Indian team’s chief selector, MSK Prasad had stated recently that the team has moved on from Dhoni now. Thus, if one considers Prasad’s statements, Dhoni would never return to India’s T20I team. The Chennai Super Kings captain has played 98 T20I matches for India in his 13-year long career.

Dhoni’s last T20I match was against Australia in February 2019. He has scored 1,617 runs at an average of 37.60 besides taking 57 catches and executing 34 stumpings behind the wickets.
