The second incident has also got its roots in the same second Test match which saw the spin-king Harbhajan Singh hog the headlines. However, the match is widely known not just for one reason. The five-day red ball game was highly rebuked by the fans and experts. As the match panned out in the hosts’ favour, it is alleged that the umpires were ‘biased’ towards the Aussies.

The umpires, Mark Benson and Steve Buckner were not upright with their duties as they gave as many as nine wrong decisions. Going under the lens of scrutiny, Indian fans were all guns out against the umpires when they almost did what Australian skipper Ricky Ponting asked them to do. Eventually, the batting brilliant Sourav Ganguly had to walk back to the dressing room as he became prey to poor umpiring.

With umpiring standards stooped to a ‘new’ low, India lost the match by 122 runs. The Australian batting all-rounder Andrew Symonds was awarded the man of the match award for his scintillating 162 unbeaten in the first innings. However, the naïve umpiring coupled with the monkey-gate scandal cements the match into dark chapters of Indian cricketing folklore.
