The series of Ashes without sledging is highly alien and with the Aussies involved in it, often, one would expect proceedings to spice up, especially when the likes of Merv Hughes are onto the field. However, there have been instances when the Englishmen have exhibited the Aussies with their own way of replying.

Once such instance, in one of the longest-running rivalry in the game, was witnessed during the second Test of Ashes in 1989 at the Lord’s when Merv Hughes ran into the English batsman Robin Smith by telling him that “You can’t f****** bat.”

However, Smith did give back a quick fitting reply by saying, “Hey Merv, we make a fine pair. I can’t f****** bat and you can’t f****** bowl.”
