India was playing West Indies in a short ODI series before the 2007 ODI World Cup. As the teams arrived on the Bhubaneshwar Airport for the Cuttack ODI, a unfortunate and forgettable incident took place. Birnachi Maharana a member of the ‘Kalinga Sena’, a so called political youth organization slapped the then Indian coach Chappell in the Airport premises itself. Maharana was angry at the non-inclusion of Orissa players in the national team.

“There are players like Debashish Mohanty and Shiv Sunder Das from Orissa who are not in the Indian team. That is why I attacked Chappell,” Maharana said after he was arrested. By all accounts, Maharana’s act appeared to be a publicity stunt.
