Indian cricket was shamed because of a few angry fans at the venue during the 2nd T20 international between India and South Africa. Shameful and unsavoury behavior marred the game as a section of spectators started hurling water bottles on the ground when South Africa were cruising to victory in pursuit of India’s paltry total. Put in to bat the hosts got bundled for 92, their second-lowest T20I total. The disgraceful incident took place first at the end of 11 overs, and the match was continued after a brief break due to the disruption. But again at the end of 13 overs a repeat happened, the crowd did not respond to repeated public requests and the game eventually had to be suspended for a while. Indian cricket fans didn’t take well to being dumped out of the 2007 ODI World Cup at the group stage. Riots ensued as thousands took the streets, burning effigies of the players for not being able to go further in the tournament. The higher the pedestal the harder the fall, and the previously adored MS Dhoni fell hard. Furious fans vented their anger on his house and vandalized it. Not only this, as many as twenty-eight villages in Haryana decided that cricket was no longer for them and banned the sport entirely, while a West Bengali farmer was so distraught that he hung himself at his Kolkata home. 3. Disgusted fans took to the streets of Kolkata after the match and burned an effigy of the captain Sourav Ganguly, before staging his mock funeral. In Mumbai, fans burned pictures of star batsman Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, while in Allahabad black paint and oil were hurled at the house of middle-order batsman Mohammad Kaif. Greg Chappell slapped: (Source) India was playing West Indies in a short ODI series before the 2007 ODI World Cup. As the teams arrived on the Bhubaneshwar Airport for the Cuttack ODI, a unfortunate and forgettable incident took place. Birnachi Maharana a member of the ‘Kalinga Sena’, a so called political youth organization slapped the then Indian coach Chappell in the Airport premises itself. Maharana was angry at the non-inclusion of Orissa players in the national team. “There are players like Debashish Mohanty and Shiv Sunder Das from Orissa who are not in the Indian team. That is why I attacked Chappell,” Maharana said after he was arrested. By all accounts, Maharana’s act appeared to be a publicity stunt. 5. India v Sri Lanka 1996 World Cup semi-final: (source) This was perhaps the most disgraceful and unfortunate incident in the history of Indian cricket after the match fixing saga. The semi-final of the 1996 World Cup that was played at the Eden Gardens provided India the home advantage against the Lankans. Keeping Sri Lanka’s chasing prowess in mind Azharuddin decided to field after winning the toss. The Lankans reached 251 which was not a huge total. India got off to a good start and in around 20 overs they were 98/1. This is when the collapse began and before anyone could realize what was going on, Indians were reduced to 120/8. India’s city of joy became the city of disgrace as a 110,000 capacity crowd at Eden Gardens brought the game to a standstill under a hail of bottles. The crowd, angry with India’s tame batting, eventually forced the game to be abandoned, and in a move unprecedented in World Cup history, the match referee, Clive Lloyd, awarded the match to Sri Lanka.
