The biggest T20 carnival, Indian Premier League (IPL), is just a week away, and the fans are already gearing up for the high-octane action to unfold. Once again, the tournament will have some of the established cricketers from around the world. Among them, certain stars will be looking to build on their reputation.

And what better way to improve your stature in the league than putting up match-winning performances. In the last 12 seasons, there have been various players who have given their best with bat and ball. Then, at the end of the game, some of these players eventually become Player of the Match.

Till now, 129 players have won these awards in the history of the league. In that also many players have got it multiple times. But there a select few who have won it consistently. For them to win a Man of the Match award is a good habit, and they have continued it for a long time.

Why bother running, when you can score runs by just hitting boundaries. It might sound eccentric, but it is the batting style followed by Chris Gayle. That’s why he is a tailor-made cricketer for the T20 format. The Caribbean star has been the greatest match-winner in this version of the game.

It can be easily verified from his IPL record. Gayle has won the most number of Man of the Match awards in the history of the tournament, 21 to be exact. The Universe Boss has won them in 125 outings. It means he plays a match-winning knock every six games, and that’s some serious achievement.

Going more in-depth, it can be seen that he has smoked six tons and 11 half-centuries on such occasions. There have also been four instances when he got the award for scoring less than 50. Interestingly, in 2011 alone, he received six of them, and his performances powered RCB to the final. In all, Gayle has done everything possible to win an IPL trophy, but luck has never been on his side.
