Test cricket was and still is the pinnacle format. The modern-day players value it a lot. Though the popularity of Test cricket has gone down we’ve got a couple of new entrants into the Test arena.

It was back in 2000 when <strong>Bangladesh</strong> became the 10th Test playing nation. 18 years later, two new teams entered the fray. Ireland and Afghanistan made their debuts in the longest formats and have played a couple of Test matches so far. There used to be three powerplays – first 10 overs and then two of five overs each (which were completed in the first 20 overs). Batting powerplay was then introduced with the batting side being able to opt for a powerplay (with just three fielders outside the 30-yard ring) any time in the innings. <p>Test cricket was and still is the pinnacle format. The modern-day players value it a lot. Though the popularity of Test cricket has gone down we’ve got a couple of new entrants into the Test arena.</p>
<p>It was back in 2000 when <strong>Bangladesh</strong> became the 10th Test playing nation. 18 years later, two new teams entered the fray. Ireland and Afghanistan made their debuts in the longest formats and have played a couple of Test matches so far. While Ireland players actively took part in County cricket and have been around for a while, Afghanistan’s rise to the top has been a fascinating story.</p>

<p>Ireland have lost both their matches so far and Afghanistan lost their debut game before winning against Ireland a couple of months back.</p>
<h3><strong>4. Birth of BBL, BPL, PSL, CPL and many T20 leagues</strong></h3>

<p>When Sohail Tanvir blew away the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batting line-up with that spell of 6/14, T20 cricket had just started off. Only one World T20 had been played and the frequency was quite low. However, as the years have rolled along, T20 cricket has become the flavour of every town and every country.</p>
<p>Since that spell, five World T20s (men’s) have been played. Moreover, each country has a T20 league of its own. The IPL set the trend and the rest followed. The Big Bash League (BBL), Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Pakistan Super League (PSL), Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and many others. Canada and UAE also now have T20 leagues of their own. Recently <strong>South Africa</strong> launched it’s own league as well – Mzansi Super League (MSL).</p>

<p>The T10 has come up as well. Hence, cricket has revolutionised into franchise cricket as well to an extent with the advent of so many T20 leagues across the world.</p>

<h3><strong>5. Removal of the batting powerplay and changes in field restrictions in ODIs</strong></h3>

<p>11 years is a long time and a lot can change in 11 years. The cricketing world has certainly turned upside down in between these two spells. The rules have undergone drastic changes as well.</p>
<p>There used to be three powerplays – first 10 overs and then two of five overs each (which were completed in the first 20 overs). Batting powerplay was then introduced with the batting side being able to opt for a powerplay (with just three fielders outside the 30-yard ring) any time in the innings. This batting powerplay also saw a few variations and then ultimately scraping of it.</p>

<p>Two new balls were introduced in ODI cricket – one ball from each end. In the non-powerplay overs, teams could opt to have five fielders outside the 30-yard circle. But it got changed to just four before it was amended again to five but that was only for the last 10 overs. Also, the first powerplay (first 10 overs) had to have two compulsory catchers but that’s been scrapped as well.</p>
<p>Now, there are three powerplays – first 10 overs, overs 10-40 and then the last 10 overs.</p>
