India’s five major men of the Test team, famously known as fabulous five were still playing the longer format in 2007/08 when Ishant Sharma got his maiden 5-wicket haul. Anil Kumble was the Test captain during that 2007 Bangalore Test while Sourav Ganguly scored his maiden double century in Test cricket in that game. Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman played that Test but Sachin Tendulkar missed due to an injury.

In 2008/09 home season, Ganguly announced that the 4-match series against Australia will be the last of his career. However, during the 3rd Test in Delhi, the then skipper Kumble announced his retirement. He suffered an injury to his little finger of the left hand and was set to miss the 4th Test. Hence, the leg-spinner decided to call time on his career at the venue where he took 10 wickets in an innings.

The 2011/12 tour of Australia witnessed the last International appearances of both Dravid and Laxman. Following ordinary performances on that tour, Rahul retired in March while VVS announced his retirement prior to the home series. Later in 2013/14 season, Sachin Tendulkar marked his exit from professional cricket in grand style at this home ground, Wankhede.
