It won’t be wrong in saying that Shakib Al Hasan has been a torchbearer of Bangladesh cricket for over a decade now. The Jessore-born has performed in the toughest of situations and has made a name for himself. The Tigers couldn’t quality beyond the league stages in the 2019 edition of the World Cup.

But the 32-year-old shone better than some of the more fancied players in the  event. However, there have been occasions when Shakib found himself in trouble. Being an animated character, he tends to cross the line. Hence, he has had to face a number of punishments over the years.

At times emotions tend to get the better of him. From fights with umpires and fans to getting tangled in match-fixing sagas, Shakib’s career on and off the field has been full of controversies.

In the article, let’s take a look at five of Shakib Al Hasan’s controversies

The incident occurred during Bangladesh’s second ODI against Sri Lanka at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. In pursuit of chasing down 290, Shakib threw his wicket away to a part-time Ashan Priyanjan. The southpaw was batting on 24 when he holed out to long-off.

10 overs later, he made a gesture towards his crotch and then the camera, a footage that was played live on TV. It was later known that Shakib didn’t take well to the criticism by the commentators after his dismissal. The all-rounder was then handed a fine of $3,800 for the ‘inappropriate gesture’.

He was also slapped with a three-man ban, including two games in the Asia Cup that year, by the Bangladesh Cricket Board. The Tigers went on to lose the Lanka match by 61 runs, getting bowled out for 228.
