One of the finest batters to have graced the game of cricket, Rahul Dravid turns 49 on Tuesday (January 11) and birthday wishes are pouring in for him from different quarters. Born in 1973, Dravid was nothing short of a nightmare for bowlers as piercing his rock-solid defense took a lot of beating. Be it tackling the bounce in Australian and South African tracks or countering the spin in sub-continental conditions, Dravid rose to every challenge which came his way and guided India to numerous wins.

Making his international debut in 1996, Dravid didn’t take long in becoming the vital cog of the national team. He, in fact, came near to scoring a century at Lord’s on Test debut. Although he got out 96 in that game, what followed next was the emergence of a run-scoring machine. Dravid was known for his phenomenal temperament through which he tormented the best of bowlers.

Owing to the same, he earned the nickname ‘The Wall.’ Dravid served the international team for nearly two decades and piled up a mountain of runs. In fact, he’s among those few batters, who scored over 10,000 runs in both ODIs and Test matches. The right-handed batter also did well in the leadership department.

Dravid became an active coach and groomed many young cricketers.

In fact, he mentored the Prithvi Shaw-led Indian team to the triumph in the Under-19 World Cup 2018. He also became the head at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to enhance the nourishment of the Indian players. With Dravid doing exceedingly well in the mentor’s role, many fans and experts wanted him to take a job at the Indian team.

Their wait finally got over last year as Rahul Dravid replaced Ravi Shastri as India’s head coach following the T20 World Cup 2021. As of now, Dravid is with India in the ongoing tour of South Africa. Hence, the Indian side would want to win a maiden Test series in the rainbow nation as a gift for their mentor.
