Aakash Chopra has had a quite fulfilling career both as a cricketer and as a broadcaster. An opening batsman of the classical mould, Chopra is more famous for helping Rajasthan become the first plate division team to win the Ranji Trophy, a success they repeated the next year. Chopra actually played most of his cricket for Delhi and, in fact, appeared in as many as 162 first-class matches.
He also played 10 Tests for India from 2003-04, when Team India was looking for openers to partner the enigmatic Virender Sehwag. In his 10 Tests, he made 437 runs and scored two fifties with a highest score of 60 and an average of 23.00. Aakash was a polar opposite to Sehwag and though he was technically sound, his inability to score runs at a decent pace cost him his place in the team to fellow Delhiite Gautam Gambhir.
Chopra’s IPL career
Recently, a meme is doing rounds on social media with Aakash Chopra’s IPL stats. Many fans were shocked to know that a classical Test match player actually was chosen in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and then got to play matches as well. Chopra was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders and played in IPL 2008 and IPL 2009. In all he featured in 7 matches, scoring 53 runs at a strike rate of 74.64 and the best score of 24 at an average of 8.83.
He was one of the four KKR players who was sent back to India from IPL 2009, which was played in South Africa, due to fitness and form issues and for being unfit for T20 matches. In IPL 2011, he was signed by Rajasthan Royals, but didn’t play a single match in the tournament and thereafter was never seen as a player in the T20 league. Chopra has divided opinions of cricket fans when it comes to his overcritical commentating style and is usually seen airing his views in Hindi on Star Sports Hindi team.
A fan shared with Chopra his IPL stats which surprised even the player himself and he responded,” With these stats, why is this man batting at 7??? Must be a bowler 🙈😂 “
