Arguably the best batsman in the South African team, AB de Villiers, has made a grand comeback to cricket. AB was injured in July 2016 and had not played a competitive match thereafter. Recently, playing in the domestic One Day tournament, the middle-order batsman looked in ominous touch as he guided his side to a thumping win. He notched up a quick century in the process and showed great signs of fitness.

AB is now most likely to play the third and final T20I against Sri Lanka in a couple of days. Playing for the Northerns against the Easterns at Benoni in CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge, AB de Villiers strolled to the pitch in the very first over as the opener was sent back cheaply. The Northerns were set a target of 200. The dynamic batsman scored close to 60 per cent of his team’s score to ensure that they chased down 200 with ease. AB started off cautiously and then built up the crescendo in his innings.

He reached his century in just 87 balls and then accelerated his way to 134 off 103 balls eventually. He finished off the game with a couple of sixes and announced his comeback in grand manner. The Northerns managed to chase the target with close to 20 overs to spare. Earlier in the match, it was Northern bowlers who did a fair job by restricting Easterns to 199 in 45.3 overs after their skipper Thomad Kaber had won the toss. They lost opener J Vandiar in their run chase but it was all about AB de Villiers from thereon.

The last time AB played a competitive match was back in July 2016 when he had turned up for Barbados Tridents against St. Lucia Zouks in the Caribbean Premier League. It was earlier expected that AB will be fit for the T20I series against Sri Lanka but had to miss out in the first two matches. He is now fit to play the final T20I against the visitors on January 25.
