Back in May 2018, Pretoria-born AB de Villiers decided to hang his boots from international cricket. He released a video where he put forth tiredness as a reason behind stepping down. His decision came as a massive blow to cricket in South Africa as he was an indispensable member of the national team. He batted at the number four position and his departure left a massive void in the batting order.

However, he made a return to the cricket pitch as he led the Tshwane Spartans in the inaugural Mzansi Super League (MSL). Then he was also picked to play for the Lahore Qalandars in next edition’s Pakistan Super League (PSL). Thereafter, he also confirmed about playing the T20 tournament in Pakistan.

I don’t think that will happen

Recently, the 34-year-old was also asked about his decision of retirement and the upcoming World Cup, which is scheduled to start on May 30. Nevertheless, De Villiers said that he doesn’t have any regrets after bidding adieu to international cricket. “I feel I’ve made the right decision to retire,” De Villiers was quoted as saying in BBC World Service’s Stumped.

The Proteas are one of the teams, which are yet to get their hands on the World Cup trophy. When asked about any mentoring role, he might take up with the South African team, the experienced campaigner remarked: “If they do approach me – and I don’t think that will happen – we’ll have a conversation and I’m pretty sure that I will be staying over here and supporting the team.”

AB’s career for the national team spanned from December 2004 to February 2018. In 114 Tests, 228 ODIs and 78 T20Is, he went up to amass 8765, 9577 and 1672 runs respectively. He also boasts of 47 centuries, donning the Proteas’ colours. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), he plies his trade for the Virat Kohli-captained Royal Challengers Bangalore.
