The BCCI selection committee led by MSK Prasad will announce the Team India squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019 to be played in England and Wales, on April 15. The Indian team is considered to be the favourites to win the tournament given that they are ranked no.2 in the ICC ODI team rankings.
The Indian team is looking at options to fill out the no.4 spot and for a finisher to back up the likes of Jadhav and Pandya and that’s where Dinesh Karthik comes in. The Nidahas trophy hero came into the contention after his exploits in the tournament and since then, has helped the Indian team win matches in Australia and New Zealand as well.
He gives you the versatility
Dinesh Karthik credits the turnaround in his career to mentor and former India batsman Abhishek Nayar, who is also the Kolkata Knight Riders’ mentor. Karthik had found himself out of favour as the selectors dropped him for India’s final five ODIs before the World Cup. But Nayar still thinks that he is versatile enough to play as a finisher and at no.4 spot also.
“I think in the past two years he has shown us how versatile he is. He is not only a finisher but even batting up the order. I think he gives you that versatility also being a wicketkeeper and a very good fielder,” Nayar was quoted saying by NewIndianExpress.
Rishabh Pant overtook Karthik as a backup wicketkeeper after he played against Australia recently and given his hitting prowess, selectors might have a difficult task of picking a backup keeper for MS Dhoni in the upcoming mega ICC event.
“He is not only a keeper backup but also a batsman backup who can come and field. We’ve seen how well he fields and the kind of catches he has taken. He is also ideal to bat at number four because of the kind batsman he’s you can use him anywhere in the batting order. So for me, he is someone I feel he should be definitely in that World Cup squad,” Nayar added.
