ACB names Sharafuddin Ashraf as replacement of Asghar Afghan for T20 WC

The former Afghanistan skipper Asghar Afghan decided to bid adieu to the game whilst the ongoing T20 World Cup. The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 has thus approved Sharafuddin Ashraf as his replacement in the squad. He was on the reserves list of the team for the mega event.

Sharafuddin Ashraf has featured in a total of 26 international matches for the team which includes nine T20Is. So far in his T20I career, he has scalped five wickets. The Afghanistan Cricket Board took it to their official Twitter account to make the announcement about the bowling all-rounder’s inclusion in the squad.

The tweet read, “Breaking: @sharafashraf82 has replaced @MAsgharAfghan in the Afghanistan squad for the T20WC2021. The decision was made following the retirement of Mr. Afghan, as he decided to quit international cricket after the Namibia game.”

Sharafuddin Ashraf is thus available for selection for Afghanistan’s next match in the high-profile tournament. The team is all set to face India in the upcoming fixture. Ashraf might make it to the team as there are doubts over Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s inclusion in the playing XI as he is recovering from his injury.

Asghar Afghan played his last game for Afghanistan against Namibia 

The former skipper played his final game for the country against Namibia wherein the team secured victory by a massive margin of 62 runs. He has been one of the most pivotal cogs of the team’s wheel over the years. He received a guard of honor by opponents Namibia when he came out to bat.

Opening up on his decision to retire, he said that he took this call with the view of providing opportunities to the younger talents.

“Most of the people are asking why now and not the end of the tournament, but some things we cannot explain like that. “In the last match (against Pakistan) we were hurt too much, that’s why I’ve decided the time is right to leave the stage. I want to give a chance to the youngsters, this is a good opportunity for the youngsters to come forward,” Afghan had stated earlier.
