While beating New Zealand in their den has been really difficult in the recent past, Bangladesh managed to do it and thus, had a fantastic start to the year. It is to be noted that this was their first win in that part of the world.

Their victory in Mount Maunganui on Wednesday made the entire cricketing fraternity shower heaps of praises on the Tigers. The veteran Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan was delighted with the outcome as well. It is to be noted that he withdrew from the tour, to spend time with his family.

However, the 34-year-old felt that his presence wasn’t necessarily important. In fact, he said that he was happy that the team won the game without him. While crediting the Mominul Haque-led side, he spoke about how the visitors don’t have to rely on their senior players.

I don’t think my presence was necessarily important: Shakib Al Hasan

“I don’t think my presence was necessarily important in New Zealand. I am actually happy that they did it without me. Not just me… (but the others too). I think what really delighted me was that the notion, particularly in the media, that not many players apart from the four or five senior ones can win games for the team – that will be changed. If they are handed the responsibility, these youngsters will play better,” said Shakib, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

He further mentioned the fact that the Asian side have had a good start to 2022. Last but not the least, the Bangladesh legend was hopeful of them continuing their good performances. The second Test between the two sides starts on January 9 at Hagley Oval, Christchurch.

“We made an unbelievable start to 2022. I am very happy. Credit goes to all the players and coaching staff for playing well under so much pressure and in these conditions. Everyone tried hard. This was always going to be a challenging year after a difficult time in 2021 for us.

“I hope we can continue in this manner. Bangladesh does not play this well all the time. Not everything will change after a Test win. But it creates the opportunity for change,” he added.
