Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa, who has donned the national outfit in 13 T20I games raised questions after being excluded for the second game in the T20 series against New Zealand. Zampa wasn’t exactly a happy camper and he questioned whether Australia is behind the curve when it comes to T20I selections.

The New South Wales cricketer claimed figures of 1/21 during their series-opening win over the Black Caps in Sydney. The Melbourne Stars tweaker wasn’t recalled for Saturday night’s match at the MCG against the Three Lions either after missing out earlier when the two sides met in Hobart.

Zampa, despite his limited career, boasts of impressive statistics when it comes to spinning in the green and gold. With an average of 15.17 and an economy of 6 runs per over, the leg-spinner would rank in the top five bowlers for both statistics in all international T20 games.

Speaking to reporters the 25-year-old Aussie said, “That’s one of the questions that I asked (selectors) the other night. A lot of countries around the world are opting for two wrist-spinners, let alone no wrist-spinners. It’s just the grounds and the situations we’ve got ourselves in probably that make it a little bit different in Australia. I think wrist spin is definitely the way forward in particular and even two or three spinners in a team,” he added.

Zampa keen to consolidate spot ahead of 2020 T20World Cup

The 25-year-old is eager to lock down his spot with Australia on a mission to improve their standing in the shortest format ahead of hosting the World T20 in two years’ time. Despite his international exploits, Zampa recently went unsold in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction.

However, he signed a deal with Essex for the upcoming T20 Blast tournament and will look to use the campaign as a launching pad to consolidate his place within the Australian side ahead of the T20 extravaganza.
