Afghanistan and Zimbabwe are set to face each other for the two-Test and three-T20I series in Abu Dhabi, starting March 2, 2021, with the Test series. The first Test will start from March 2 while the second Test will be played from March 10, followed by the three T20Is on March 17, 19, and 20, respectively. All five matches will be held at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
While the Sean Williams-led Zimbabwe has included four uncapped players in Wesley Madhevere, Richard Ngarava, Blessing Muzarabani, Brandon Mavuta, in their 15-member squad, the 19-member Afghanistan Test squad includes as many as eight uncapped players: Bahir Shah Mohboob, Fazal Haq Farooqi, Sayed Ahmed Shirzad, Abdul Malik, Munir Ahmad Kakar, Shahidullah Kamal, Saleem Safi, and Zia Ur Rahman Akbar.
Some notable exclusions from Zimbabwe include Brendan Taylor and Craig Ervine (both due to illness), Tendai Chatara, Chamu Chibhabha, and Peter Moor (all injured), although, they have recalled middle-order batsman Ryan Burl who will feature alongside Sean Williams, Sikandar Raza, Regis Chakabva, and Donald Tiripano.
For Afghanistan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Qais Ahmad, and Noor Ahmad have been picked only for the T20I series, which means that they can continue their PSL duties during the Tests, unlike Rashid Khan, who is a part of both Test and T20I squads and is set to miss a large chunk of the PSL 2021. However, currently, Rashid is nursing a finger injury that he picked in the tournament, and it remains to be seen whether or not he will participate in the first Test.
