South African speedster Morne Morkel is close to signing a Kolpak deal with any of the English counties as 3 counties have set him as their target. The news was confirmed on Sunday by ESPN Cricinfo. However, Protea bowling legend Alan Donald has urged Morkel to keep himself away from moving to a different country.
Morne Morkel had previously stated that he is very well aware of the fact that his international career for South Africa is slowly approaching a dead end. Morkel, who will turn 33 in October, does not have age on his side. After the completion of South Africa’s tour of England, Morkel stated that he is “fully committed” to represent South Africa. Though South Africa lost the four match series to England 3-1, Morkel had a successful series and was named the Proteas’ Man of the Series. The bowler picked up 19 wickets in the campaign at an average of 26.36.
If reports are to be believed, one of the counties who has kept Morkel on their radar is Warwickshire. It has also come into notice that a London club has also shown interest in the tall South African. It is believed that Morne Morkel is considering his options before taking a final call.
Kolpak deals have caused South Africa huge damage in the recent past as the team has lost several cricketers because of them. Players in the name of David Wiese, Kyle Abbott, Rilee Rossouw, Colin Ingram, Stiaan van Zyl, Simon Harmer, Dane Vilas and Hardus Viljoen have all chosen Kolpak deals over representing the country.
What Alan Donald said:
Going by the rumours, Alan Donald spoke to the Titans website about Morkel. According to the retired international, South Africa requires the services of Morkel and the cricketer should not reconsider his future.
“Give him what he wants. Let him retire on his terms,” said Donald.
“We need him this summer. I have not seen him bowl this well for many, many seasons.” added Donald.
“There’s no doubt Morkel is world-class. It is just a shame that he did not take bucket loads of wickets in England because he deserved it,” Donald stated. “He beat the bat on countless occasions without reward.” Donald concluded.
