Alastair Cook, the Glouster-born cricketer, yesterday, decided to bid adieu to international cricket. He will play the last Test match against India at Kennington Oval in London after which he will bow out of cricket at the highest level. Cook hasn’t had the best of series by any means having scored only 109 runs in seven innings at a rather dismal average of 15.57.

The last one year hasn’t been joyful for the 33-year-old and barring his 244 not out against Australia last year, he hasn’t been able to show his class and calibre with the willow. In the meantime, Michael Clarke, the former Australian cricketer, couldn’t stop heaping praise on the English opener. He also hailed Cook as someone who always walked the talk with his relentless hard word.

He was a fighter

“Alastair was a gentleman and a great ambassador for the game of cricket. I’ve always believed it’s not what you say, it’s what you do and he’s a great example of that. He wasn’t a big talker on or off the field but when he said something it was important, and that was the way he played,” Clarke was quoted as saying by News Corp Australia.

Cook has captained quite a few times against Australia as well. He led the Three Lions to victory on two occasions at home against Australia, however, had to engulf the defeat by 5-0 in Down Under in 2013-14. Clarke also mentioned that Cook hasn’t been given due credit to the work he has done, donning the national colours.

“He was a fighter and he batted in what I believe is the toughest position in our game, opening the batting. He found a way to score runs in all conditions and that’s a sign of a great player, that he can adapt and find a way to be successful all around the world. He probably hasn’t received the credit he has deserved for being such a good player,” he added.
