In what was Morne Morkel’s last outing as a Test player for Proteas, South Africa thrashed the visitors Australia by a huge margin of 492 runs to win the series 3-1. The 33-year-old had an illustrious career representing the Proteas. He is one of the tallest pacers to have graced the game and used his tall frame to great effect. Morne hit the deck hard and extracted extra bounce from the surface, it helped him surprise most batsmen and was a key behind his success.

His brother Albie Morkel who also represented South Africa but didn’t play as many matches was considered to be the more talented among the two; being an all-rounder he always had the edge. But Morne battled all the injuries and aced through the struggles each time to come back and prove everyone who wrote him off wrong.

Morne played his last Test with the 4th Test of the South Africa vs Australia series and hung up his big boots. Albie congratulated him with a tweet and wrote, “Well done brother @mornemorkel65. End of a real success story. In the end family wins.. Enjoy life!”

His final encounter:

In his final Test for the national team, the pacer walked away with a side strain in the first innings, after bowling nearly 13 overs picking up the wicket of the Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh.

However, in the second innings, his bowling came through luckily with all the treatment that he received in the two days off that the South African bowlers had. He picked up the wicket of the opener Matt Renshaw early in the innings and troubled the left-handed Usman Khawaja in his short stay.

The lanky pacer returned back later in the day to pick up the crucial wicket of the other Australian opener Joe Burns, who looked good to play a long innings. Having picked up 309 wickets in only 86 Test matches, the right-arm pacer leaves behind a void for the management to fill.

He had the kind of farewell game most dream of. South Africa beat Australia by a huge margin of 490 runs and they also won the series 3-1, which is the first time the Proteas have won a series at home against the Aussies.
