Gautam Gambhir has revealed a player for whom he used to plan quite particularly during his tenure as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders. He further noted that this player was even more dangerous to him than the likes of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. The player that he mentioned was the current Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma.
Just ahead of the match between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders in Abu Dhabi on September 23, Gambhir praised the way Rohit bats. He also pointed out that during his seven years of captaincy, Rohit got a lot of runs against KKR. Gautam said that he never planned for other batters, but he would definitely have against Rohit Sharma.
“If you see Rohit Sharma, he has gotten heaps of runs against KKR. I have made it very clear as well that in my seven years of captaincy, I never planned against anyone – whether it was Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, or AB de Villiers. All I had to plan in those seven years was against Rohit Sharma,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.
He has given us a lot of nightmares: Gautam Gambhir
Speaking of Rohit’s record against KKR, he has the most runs for any batter against a single franchise. Rohit already crossed the 1000-run mark against Kolkata in the IPL on September 23, as he added 78 from 56 balls alongside Quinton de Kock for the first wicket.
Gambhir was the skipper of KKR between 2011 and 2017, winning the two titles in 2012 and 2014. He also spoke about Rohit’s ability. He noted that he is someone who can play all kinds of roles as batter and had given KKR a lot of nightmares. It should also be noted that Rohit had a good record at the Eden Gardens, KKR’s home ground. His only ever IPL century is against Kolkata at the venue.
“I knew that he plays spin very well, he plays fast bowling really well and he can attack and dominate whenever he wants irrespective of what the conditions are. He has given us a lot of nightmares,” Gambhir added.
