Last one year has seen Rohit Sharma riding the most interesting curve of his career, especially in Tests. The batsman in his early 30s was dubbed a discard in the longer format after a poor show in the series in South Africa earlier this year. He was ignored for matches against Afghanistan, England and Windies but his excellence in the limited-overs formats saw him back into the Test squad for the upcoming four-Test series in Australia.

Rohit, who dazzled not only as a batsman in white-ball cricket, has also done magnificently well as the captain whenever regular skipper Virat Kohli has not been around, scored 40 runs in the four-day practice game against Cricket Australia XI in Sydney ahead of the first Test. The injury to young opener Prithvi Shaw has made the chances of Rohit of making a return to the playing XI in a Test even brighter.

Rohit missed out for some crucial time due to injury

India’s former Test captain Anil Kumble, who was the skipper of the side in the infamous Monkeygate series Down Under in 2007-08, backed Rohit saying the latter has matured enough as a player and is capable of handling any situation. Kumble also reflected on Rohit’s injury during the home series against New Zealand in 2016 which saw him missing cricket for a period of four-six months.

“I think initially he missed out because of injury. He was batting really well, coming up really well against New Zealand. Rohit won the game in Kolkata, he got a brilliant 80 and then, unfortunately, he got injured against New Zealand in the one-day series and he was out of the game for almost 4-6 months,” Kumble was quoted as saying by CricketNext.

According to India’s highest wicket-taker in Tests, the injury cost Rohit a place in the team in red-ball cricket. He said the Mumbai batsman would have been a part of the home series against Australia last year. Rohit though came back with a decent series against Sri Lanka at home that included a hundred, his latest in Test cricket, but failed to impress in South Africa to be dropped eventually.

“If he can contribute, then we know how well he can contribute. So, that to me is the reason why Rohit Sharma is back,” the 48-year-old legendary leg-spinner said.
