Team India’s highest wicket-taker in Tests, Anil Kumble is a great thinker of the game. He analyses the game really well and also led the side for a brief period of time. In his two-decade-long international career, Kumble has played under several captains and spent some close quarters with some of the legends of Indian cricket. However, when asked to name his favourite captain, Anil Kumble had an answer that would surprise many.

The veteran leg-spinner named Mohammad Azharuddin as his all-time favourite. In fact, Kumble made his debut under Azhar in 1990. Azharuddin is one of the high-rated Indian skippers and was the one who originally brought an aggressive flavour into Indian cricket. The middle-order batsman was one of the most successful Indian captains during his times.

He featured in 99 Tests and 334 ODIs for India, in what proved to be a rather tragedic end to his career. Out of these, he led the team in 47 Tests and 174 ODIs and never backed off during adversities.

Anil Kumble’s wife is a huge fan of MS Dhoni

While Kumble admires Azharuddin, his wife, on the other hand, is a huge fan of MS Dhoni. Kumble revealed that she never fails to click a picture with India’s most successful skipper whenever she meets him. “She always takes a picture with him when we meet,” Kumble was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

Kumble has represented India in 132 Tests and 271 ODIs. The leggie has 956 wickets to his name in international cricket. He picked 619 wickets in Test cricket alone and is only behind the legendary Muttiah Muralidharan and Shane Warne.  He is also only the second player to pick all the 10 wickets in an innings in a Test match.

Kumble called it quits in 2008, after 18 years of international cricket. Post his retirement, he held several positions in the Karnataka association and the BCCI. He was also the head coach of the Indian team for a brief period of time.
