Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has taken a massive decision ahead of their second appearance in the World Cup which is set to start from May 30. Asghar Afghan has been sacked from captaincy by the board from all the three formats and this comes as a shocking development from the Asian country. The team looked settled under him and had won all the three series against Ireland which was their final international assignment before the mega event.

According to the reports in TOLO News, Gulbadin Naib has been named the ODI captain and will be now leading the team in the World Cup. The squad for the event will also be soon announced and things will get clearer then in terms of captaincy. As far as the T20Is are concerned, Rashid Khan will lead the side while Rahmat Shah has been handed over the Test captaincy.

Meanwhile, Rashid Khan has been named the vice-captain of the ODI side while Shafiquallah Shafaq will be Rashid’s deputy in the T20 Internationals. Rahmat Shah will be assisted by Hashmatullah Shahidi in the longest format of the game in terms of captaincy. One will hope that all these changes work for good of Afghanistan cricket but their first target will be to do well in the World Cup.

Asghar’s captaincy record

Asghar Afghan had done a decent enough job for Afghanistan while being at the helm which is why this comes as a surprising decision from the ACB and that too ahead of the World Cup. In the 56 ODIs which he led his country, Afghanistan won 31 of them. Asghar though had a great captaincy record in the shortest format winning 37 out of 46 matches.

He also led the team in the two Test matches which Afghanistan played against India and Ireland and won against the latter side.
