Australia needed little more than an hour on the final day to complete an empathic 10-wicket victory in the opening Ashes Test. The pair of David Warner and Cameron Bancroft remained unbeaten on 87 and 82 respectively to guide their team to a 1-0 lead in the series. The home team batted 16 overs for the remaining 56 runs with the debutant Bancroft scoring the winning runs.

4 – Number of Man of the Match awards in Test cricket for Steven Smith as a captain. These are the joint most number of Man of the Match awards for any captain alongside Virat Kohli since the start of 2009. Smith made his captaincy debut in December 2014.


8 – Steven Smith’s eight man of the match awards in Test cricket are the most for an Australian since his debut in 2010. All his eight Man of the Match awards have come since 2013, most for any player in this span.


10 – Australia’s 10-wicket win is the 9th such win for any team in the Ashes. This was Australia’s 6th 10-wicket victory in the Ashes while England has three such wins. The last one was by Australia in Sydney in 2007. Australia’s last 10-wicket win in Test cricket was in 2010 against New Zealand in Wellington.


37 – In the previous 37 series’ where Australia won a Test match at Brisbane, they ended up winning the series on 34 occasions. They lost by 3-1 to England in 1954/55 while a 1952/53 series against South Africa (2-2) and the 2011 series against New Zealand (1-1) ended in a draw.


82*Cameron Bancroft’s 82 is the highest individual score in the 4th innings by an Australian debutant. The previous highest was 71* by Norm O’Neill also against England in Brisbane, 1958.


170 – The 170-run target chased down by Australia is the joint highest in Test cricket without losing a wicket. Aussies equalled their own record which they set by chasing down 170 against West Indies in Adelaide way back in 1930.


173* – Australia’s opening stand of unbeaten 173 runs is the highest in the 4th innings for any opening pair since Michael Slater and Mark Taylor’s 208 in Sydney Test in 1995 against England. Overall, this is the 6th biggest opening partnership in the 4th innings of a Test for any pair.


173* – The 173-run opening stand between Bancroft and Warner is the highest for Australia in the Ashes since the 185-run partnership between Justin Langer and Matthew Hayden in The Oval Test in 2005.
