After conceding a huge 5th wicket stand, Australia made a comeback in the Perth Test to restrict the visiting side to 403 and a good start with the bat in reply. England’s innings came to an end by the Lunch as they lost their last six wickets for only 35 runs after the huge 237-run stand between Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow came to an end. Steven Smith led Australia’s counterattack with an unbeaten 92 off 122 balls as the home side ended the day on 203/3.

All the stats and numbers recorded on the 2nd day that marked Australia’s comeback:

4Jonny Bairstow became the 4th England wicketkeeper to score a hundred in Test cricket on Australian soil. Allan Knott, Jack Richards and Matt Prior are the other England players to score a Test ton on the Aussie soil while playing as a wicketkeeper.

5 – Number of instances of two centurions in an innings for England in the Ashes in the last 20 years. All those five including Malan-Bairstow’s innings came in Australia only. England had two centurions in the 2006 and 2010 Adelaide Tests while three centurions in the Sydney Test and the 2nd innings of Brisbane Test in 2010.

35 – Runs added by England for their last six wickets in their first innings. These are the fewest in an Ashes innings since 32 runs by Australia in the first innings of the 2010 Melbourne Test.

237 – The partnership of 237 between Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow is England’s joint 3rd biggest stand in Test cricket and the biggest against Australia for the 5th wicket. Dennis Compton and Eddie Paynter shared a 206-run partnership in 1938 in Nottingham.

237 – The 237-run stand between Malan and Bairstow is the 4th biggest stand against Australia and the 2nd biggest for a visiting team in Australia for the 5th wicket in Test cricket. The Indian pair of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman holds this record with their 376 for the 5th wicket in the 2003 Adelaide Test.

403 – England’s total of 403 is their 2nd highest in the last 13 Ashes Test matches. They made 430 in the first innings of the Cardiff Test in 2015.

2001 – The last instance of a No.5 and a No.6 batsman scoring hundreds in an Ashes innings before Malan and Bairstow was Steve Waugh and Damien Martyn in the 2001 Birmingham Test match. Overall, this was the 7th such instance in the Ashes.
