The 4th Test match between Australia and India at The Gabba in January 2021 is an encounter that every Indian cricket fan will remember with fondness. The Indian side chased down a target of 328 set by Australia with 3 wickets to spare to post a sensational victory.

And now, one of the architects of the victory, Shubman Gill, who scored a superb 91 in the second innings has opened up about this match. Gill said that after scalping the wicket of Rohit Sharma, the Australian players celebrated in a casual manner as if knowing that their work was done and it was only a matter of time before they wrapped up the Indian innings.

“It was as if they [Australians] knew the procession had started. They celebrated casually. Ho gaya kaam–types [As if their work is done],” said Gill in a chat with journalist Jamie Alter.

I was able to conquer my doubts in Australia: Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill also added that when he was making his Test match debut in Australia, the major doubt that cropped up in his mind was whether he will be able to handle the pace in those wickets. Gill elaborated that Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc are famous for their pace, while Josh Hazlewood is a bowler who can bowl tight lengths.

Gill concluded by stating that he was able to conquer his doubts in the land of the kangaroos and felt comfortable while facing up to the likes of Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood.

“As a youngster making your debut in Australia, the biggest doubt in your mind is whether you will be able to handle the pace. Pat Cummins and Starc are known for their pace and Josh Hazlewood for his line and length. But when I was able to conquer that doubt and I felt comfortable handling that pace, then it was all about my mindset,” concluded Shubman Gill.

Shubman Gill sizzled with the willow in that Test series against the kangaroos. The right-hander scored 259 runs in the 6 innings that he played, and scored his runs at an average of 51.80.
