The Australian cricket is clearly in doldrums with two of their best players not playing. After losing the four-match Test series to India at home for the first time in 71 years, they will be looking to make amends by winning against Sri Lanka. The visitors are also struggling with their own issues and the series is expected to be closely fought. Meanwhile, Cricket Australia (CA) has named the two new vice-captains in Travis Head and Pat Cummins for the upcoming series.

Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh, the earlier co vice-captains, are not playing this series which has led to the CA elevating Head and Cummins. While the former has been ruled out of the two Tests due to injury, the all-rounder Mitch Marsh has been axed. Both Head and Cummins were excellent against India and deserve an opportunity to play the deputy role to Tim Paine.

“The Board of Cricket Australia has endorsed the National Selection Panel’s recommendation for Travis Head and Patrick Cummins to be appointed Co-Vice Captains for the two Test matches against Sri Lanka,” the national selector Trevor Hohns said in a press release.

Cummins and Head deserved candidates

Trevor Hohns was all praise of both the cricketers in the statement and felt that they were the best candidates for Australia at this stage. Head was the second highest run-getter for his team in the Test series against India with 237 runs in seven innings while Cummins was the one who kept the home team in the hunt by tirelessly bowling long spells throughout the series.

He accounted for 14 scalps in seven innings and sent down a whopping 145 overs during that period. “I’d like to congratulate both Travis and Patrick on being named co-Vice Captains for the series. It is a fitting reward for their professionalism and dedication to drive the elite standards of the Australian Men’s Test team,” the statement further read.
