Australia managed to save themselves from an embarrassing whitewash by winning the dead-rubber against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday by 12 runs. Though Virat Kohli tried to take his team home in the run-chase, the spinners Mitchell Swepson and Adam Zampa quashed all the hopes for visitors.

Losing the toss, Aaron Finch & Co. were put to bat first. Australia had a troubled start as skipper Finch bagged a duck and went back to the pavilion in the second over on the delivery by Washington Sundar. This was followed by Matthew Wade and Steve Smith constructing the innings and stitching a crucial partnership of 65 runs.

Wade and power-hitter Glenn Maxwell then collected 90 runs in 8 overs to take Australia towards an above-par total of 186 runs for 5 wickets in their 20 overs. While wicketkeeper-batsman Wade smashed 80 runs off 53 deliveries, Maxwell added 54 runs to the scoreboard in 36 balls.

The Indian players gave many lifelines to the opposition batters as they were sloppy on the field and failed to take the catches. Washington Sundar was the pick of the bowlers for India as he scalped two wickets and finished with the figures of 4-0-34-2. T Natarajan and Shardul Thakur also had one each to their name.

Virat Kohli plays a stunning knock of 85 runs

In reply, India also had a torrid start as Glenn Maxwell took the wicket of KL Rahul in the first over. Indian skipper Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan looked strong in the middle, however, the latter departed after scoring 28 runs in 8.5 overs. After that what followed was a series of wickets for the Indian contingent. Virat held his fort at one end and continued scoring runs for his team but no batsman could support him from the other end.

India still had hopes of chasing 187 when Hardik Pandya and Kohli started smashing the ball all over the park in the 17th over. But Zampa returned in the 18th over to name the priced wicket of Pandya followed by Kohli getting out on the delivery by Andrew Tye after playing a stunning knock of 85 runs off 61 deliveries. Thus, India could only score 174 runs in 20 overs and lost the game by 12 runs.
