Australia didn’t take much time on the final day to seal a big win in the Perth Test match and level the four-match series against India. Resuming the 5th day at 112/5, India added only 28 runs in the 15 overs of play to lose their last five wickets. Rishabh Pant tried to bat with the tail but scored only 30 before getting out to Nathan Lyon. Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins picked up two wickets apiece as India lost their last four wickets in the space of 14 deliveries.

All the major stats and numbers that were recorded during India’s defeat in the Perth Test:

Records in losing cause for Kohli:

6 – Number of Test centuries as captain in losing cause for Virat Kohli; the most by any captain in Test defeats. He thus went past Brian Lara who had five Test tons in Windies’ defeats.

7 – Kohli now has seven Test hundreds in defeats which are the joint second most by an Indian. Sachin Tendulkar and Mohammad Azharuddin have 11 and seven centuries each in Test losses.

A non-existing lower-order:

11 – The 11 runs aggregated by India’s lower order (8-11) in this game are the second fewest by them in a Test match across both the innings. Their tail-enders collectively scored five runs in the 2003 Boxing Day Test against Australia in Melbourne.

A tough year for India and chasing teams:

6India lost on all the six instances in away Test matches in 2018 where they were chasing a target. Their six Test defeats while chasing this year are the most for any team in a calendar year. No other team has lost more than four Tests while chasing a target in a calendar year.

5-26 – The win-loss record for the teams chasing a target in Test cricket in 2018. The teams batting 4th won five games and lost 26 out of 34 matches thus far. The 26 matches they have lost are the most in a calendar year surpassing the 24 defeats in 2016.

7 – Number of Test defeats for India in 2018; the joint-most for them in a calendar year. India lost seven Tests in 1959 and 1983 where they played 9 and 18 Tests respectively.

Lyon likes hunting down India:

2 – The Player of the Match award for Nathan Lyon in this match was his second in Tests against India. He is only the third spinner with two Man of the Match awards in the whites against India. Muttiah Muralitharan and Moeen Ali are the two spin bowlers with multiple such awards against them in the longer format.

46 – Number of wickets for Nathan Lyon in Test matches in Australia against India. He now has the most number of Test wickets by an Aussie bowler at home against the Indians. He went past Brett Lee’s tally of 45 wickets by dismissing Rishabh Pant.
