The Australia-India Test series continues to live up to its billing. The first day of the second Test match in Perth has ended with the scales in balance as the hosts ended the day almost giving up a great start by their openers Marcus Harris and Aaron Finch. All the talk of the green top being the graveyard for the batsmen were put to rest in the wicket-less first session after Australia opted to bat first in the morning.

India went with an all-pace attack as Virat Kohli’s selection once again surprised everyone. Ravindra Jadeja was expected to replace Ravi Ashwin. Instead, he went for Umesh Yadav’s pace who played as the fourth fast bowler and in turn took the risk of elongating the tail from number eight itself.

Excited with the green top, the Indian fast bowlers couldn’t pitch the ball in the right areas and went on to concede 47 runs in the first hours when 13 overs were bowled. But then managed to stem the run-flow even as Harris and Finch denied to deter. The post-lunch session also started brightly for them as the duo added more than 100 runs while also notching up respective half-centuries.

But Finch lost his concentration and was rapped on the pads by Jasprit Bumrah to get out plumb after which Usman Khawaja wafted at a harmless delivery to edge it back to the wicket-keeper. Hanuma Vihari was the surprise package of the day as he snaffled the impressive Harris who was looking set to score his maiden Test ton.

Engrossing final session

Three wickets in the middle session kept India in the game big time and the balance shifted a bit in India’s favour soon when the play started. Peter Handscomb tried to cut a short ball and ended up edging it to the wide second slip where Virat Kohli took a sensational catch. But then Shaun Marsh and Travis Head stitched a crucial partnership in the context of the game.

Both of them added 84 runs for the fifth wicket and just when the day was belonging to Australia, Hanuma Vihari’s golden arm struck for the second time. Marsh tried to cut the ball close to the body and Ajinkya Rahane took a very good catch. Head was also snaffled with the new ball by Ishant Sharma to give India a hope to roll over the opposition late in the day.

However, the gritty Tim Paine and Pat Cummins didn’t deter and played out the remaining overs to end the day on 277/6 after 90 overs. India will have to skittle the last four wickets quickly now which has been a problem for them of late and then bat well.

Meanwhile, the social media gimmicks were at work throughout the roller-coaster day as they trolled both Aussie batsmen and the Indian bowlers as well.
