India and Australia locked horns in one of the three Boxing Day Tests on Wednesday. More than 73,000 spectators greeted both the teams on the day as the visitors won an all-important toss. The pitch didn’t have much in it only for the inconsistent bounce on a good length area which kept the batsmen on the tenterhooks. Mayank Agarwal was the man in focus who became India 295th Test player and he didn’t disappoint the crowd.

The new opening pair in Agarwal and Hanuma Vihari blunted the new ball superbly. While the former showed superb determination and didn’t get overawed by the occasion, his partner concentrated on just defending the new ball and tired out the bowlers. He grind it out for 66 balls before getting a snorter of a delivery from Pat Cummins. Though he had done his job and was lauded by many.

Meanwhile, Agarwal had managed to get rid of the early butterflies and batting well to be joined by Cheteshwar Pujara. They patiently batted for 36 overs together and added 83 runs for the second wicket even as the debutant brought up his half-century. He eventually scored 76 before being strangled down the leg-side off Cummins yet again.

Wicketless final session

At 123/3 after two sessions of hard-fought cricket, the game was balanced going into the final session of the day. Virat Kohli was the key as Pujara was looking ever so solid once again. Even the Aussie pacers came hard at the duo but they didn’t deter. Both of them played out the session without much fuss though the second new ball moved a fair way.

Mitchell Starc was all over Kohli during the short spell at the fag end of the day. The fast bowler also created a chance but Tim Paine dropped him on 47 as India closed a rare dominant day on the overseas tour in recent times. They ended the day on 215/2 after 89 overs as Pujara looked set for another century staying unbeaten on 68 runs.

India are on top at the moment and the first session of the second day will decide the fate of the game. Australia will need quick wickets now else the tourists look set to pile on the runs now.
