The highlight of the day was India declaring just ahead of stumps and surprising the hosts. They didn’t extend the lower order batting for too long and when there was still time in hand to get a few overs asked the Aussies to come out and bat. The Indian bowlers had a go at Aaron Finch and Marcus Harris for 6 overs after their batsmen posted 443/7 decl.

It started at 215/2 for India with skipper Virat Kohli at Cheteshwar Pujara at the crease unbeaten on 68 and 47 respectively on day 2. While Pujara converted his fifty into his 17th Test ton, the second on the tour, Kohli was a bit too aggressive against the short ball and perished on 82. But for a change, the Indian middle order didn’t let the start go and capitalized on it to pile on Australia’s agony.

The Australian bowlers worked really hard all through the day with little support from the pitch and even their fielders. Ajinkya Rahane had a good partnership with Rohit Sharma – while the vice-captain fell to one that stayed low, Rohit made the best of the lives Australian fielders gifted him.

He converted it into a half century and took the Indian total past 400 with Rishabh Pant for company. With Rohit on the crease and playing with a lot of patience, the Aussies even tried to get into his head. Tim Paine put in a lot of effort to provoke him to play the big shot but he stayed level-headed and walked back unbeaten on 63 from 114 when India declared their innings.

Australia had to even use the third new ball in the innings having spent almost 170 overs on the field. Virat Kohli wanted to have a crack at the tired batters before stumps and both the openers played and missed but didn’t go down. The start was good from both the Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma as well as Ravindra Jadeja. They will come in tomorrow fresh with a new ball still at their disposal.
